This weekend marks the first Sunday of Advent on the Church Calendar, a season of preparing our hearts for the coming of the Christ child.
It's so easy during the Christmas season to get so busy with shopping and company parties and baking cookies and Santa and sending our Christmas cards that we can find ourselves on Christmas day saying, "Where did this month go? It just flew by...and here it is: Christmas already!"
Advent helps us to prepare room, to pause to reflect: to be intentional and make sure that lean into Christmas and anticipate the hope that came into the world through a small baby boy. For more information and resources regarding Advent, check out Wikipedia.
But we wanted to go beyond just advent.
This year we've created an opportunity to celebrate advent and add a missional emphasis to it.
We're calling it The Advent Challenge.
It's a chance to prepare our hearts for Christ's birth and bless the world in the process.
At the bottom of this post is a document you can download that outlines the specifics of the Advent Challenge.
Each day this month we've provided the chance for you to read a passage of Scripture and engage in an activity using your loose change. (We've arranged the daily activities in such a way that they can be appropriate for people of all ages - young adults, senior citizens and families with young children, etc).
Each Sunday night at resonate we'll be collecting the loose change. And at the end of December we will be collecting all the loose change and donating it to two organizations that are working towards justice in the world.
Even though this is initiated and sponsored by resonate we don't want it simply to remain at resonate. No, we are encouraging those at resonate take the Advent Challenge and challenge everyone they know to take the Advent Challenge also!
You may read this blog and not attend resonate.
You may not even live in Pennsylvania.
You may read this blog and not even live in the U.S.
But would you consider printing this document out and joining with us in this opportunity as we together prepare our hearts for Christ's birth and bless the world in the process?
Consider doing this yourself. And consider inviting your boyfriend/small group/family/co-workers/entire church as well. How great would it be if hundreds of people from resonate and around
the country and world joined together on this project to bless the
